Brian Bell's Music Background I am a 25 year old drummer who has played since the age of 13. During that time I have played with several semi-serious groups mostly in the style of rock. I did play in the youth worship band in my hometown (Houston, TX) at Chapelwood United Methodist, during high school. After high school I studied privately at Texas Christian University under Joey Carter who was on staff in the music school. During this time I realized that I wanted to be a professional musician.
Recently I graduated from the drum program at the LA Music Academy in Pasadena, CA. During this intense 40 week program I was taught and drilled on many different styles including, Rock, Funk, Jazz, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, ECM/Fusion, and we also studied grooves in odd time signatures. Almost everyday we would have an ensemble with professional LA musicians playing a particular style. In addition to all of the drumset playing and learning, I also was taught several percussion instruments that I can now play. These include many different afro-cuban and brazilian instruments such as congas, timbales, tamborim, surdo, pandeiro etc. While attending LAMA I played in both the school’s fusion and Latin bands. I played drumset in the fusion band while playing percussion in the Latin band.
More Than Just A Drummer Throughout the years I have studied some piano and I also have acquired a good understanding/knowledge of harmony and theory. Starting from elementary school and up through high school I sang in the choir at my church. I have been blessed with a good ear for music and I believe I can be a great asset to any group. Currently I am continuing to study on both drumset and piano, while looking to become a better musician in general. I am available for any or all of your musical needs.
Back in Houston Since being back here I have played around town with numerous musicians and have done several projects. I was in an original rock fusion group by the name of Rooster Crow. Songs can be heard via www.roostercrowtribe.com. Since moving on from Rooster Crow I’ve done some studio work with a local singer/songwriter Adam Berry. I have been laying down drum tracks for his new CD and we are getting closer everyday to a finished product. Currently I am playing with the jazz group Emphasis. We play mostly standards that are a combination of straight ahead, fusion, Brazilian, and Latin jazz.
Teaching I am currently on staff at the Bridges Academy of Fine Arts located within St. Lukes Methodist Church in Houston. If you are interested in taking lessons through the school you can contact associate director Randy Murrow at the following.
